Congresswoman Bush Secures $2.43 Million to Fund the Center for Economic Advancement at Covenant House Missouri

Congresswoman Cori Bush’s office announced $18.4 million in Community Project Funding, including $2.43 million for the Center for Economic Advancement at Covenant House Missouri. The project is one of 15 community project funding requests for Missouri’s First District.

The Center for Economic Advancement will be constructed on an adjected property currently owned by Covenant House Missouri (CHMO) at 5017 Maffitt Ave. The formerly unoccupied building will be developed into a vibrant hub for holistic economic development programs designed to assist youth who are at-risk or experiencing homelessness in achieving a fulfilling future.

Congresswoman Bush identified economic development as one of the highest needs of the St. Louis region, stating, “It is critical to provide a social safety net for all members of our community. Investing in education and workforce development is an investment in the growth of our region. I am so proud to partner with Covenant House to deliver this congressionally directed funding for the Center for Economic Advancement, which will uplift the next generation of young people entering the workforce, assisting them on their journey and improving our St. Louis community for generations to come.”

The community-based space will provide resources to youth to advance their degrees of education, develop the hard and soft skills needed in the workplace, increase their levels of financial education and empowerment, connect to mentors, and grow their social capital. The transformation of this space will also further advance the workforce development programs CHMO currently operates, enhance established partnerships and provide employers an access to point to a talent pipeline.

“This investment will be transformative in our ability to expand and enhance the quality of our services. This news is a monumental first step forward in making some of our larger visions for youth, our organization, and our surrounding community a reality,” shared Covenant House Missouri CEO, Jessica Erfling. This news comes as Covenant House Missouri celebrates its 25th year serving youth in the St. Louis region.
